New Vehicle Registrations Soften

The Motor Industry Association’s Mark Stockdale says that 12,049 registrations of new vehicles for the month of June shows the market is weakening in the face of raising costs of living, high fuel prices, continued vehicle supply constraints and a weakening New Zealand economy.

Registrations of 9,563 passenger cars and SUV’s were down 7.2% (743 units) on the same month last year. Registrations of 2,486 new commercial vehicles were down 48.5% (2,343 units) on June last year and are likely to remain subdued in coming months due to the effect of the clean car taxes.

Overall, registrations of new vehicles were down 20.4% (3,086 units) on June 2021. Year to date the market has now slipped below 2021, down 3.1% (2,595 units) compared to the first six months of 2021.

Toyota retained the overall market leader with 18% market share (2,209 units), followed by Mitsubishi with 17% (2,006 units) and Kia in third spot with 12% market share (1,408 units).

Market share year to date, Mitsubishi retains the lead with 17% (13,768 units), followed by Toyota 16% share (12,911 units) and then Ford with 8% (6,562 units).

BEVs, PHEVs and Hybrids

There were 549 light vehicle and 9 heavy vehicle full battery electric vehicles registered in June. The top selling models were the Hyundai Kona (152 units) followed by the Polestar 2 (103 units) and the Kia EV6 (65 units).

Registrations of plug-in hybrids were steady with 759 units registered for the month. The top selling models were the Mitsubishi Outlander (273 units) followed by the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross (205 units) and then the MG HS (65 units).

There were 1,166 hybrids registered in the month of June, with the top selling models being the Toyota RAV4 (227 units) followed by the Toyota Corolla (180 units) and the Toyota Highlander (156 units).

SUV and passenger vehicle sales June / 2022

Mitsubishi regained the market lead for passenger and SUV registrations with 19% market share (1,827 units) followed by Kia with 15% (1,408 units) and then Toyota with 13% market share (1,285 units).

The top selling passenger and SUV models for the month were the Mitsubishi Outlander (903 units) followed by the Kia Sportage (661 units) and the Mitsubishi ASX (435 units).

Commercial vehicle sales June / 2022

In a continuing weak market for light commercial vehicles, Toyota dominated the commercial vehicle sector with 37% market share (924 units) followed by Ford with 12% (287 units) and Mitsubishi in third with 7% market share (179 units).

The Toyota Hilux took top spot for the month of June as the bestselling commercial model with 31% share (771 units) followed by the Ford Ranger with 9% share (225 units) and the Toyota Hiace in third place with 5% market share (122 units).

Market share year to date, the Ford Ranger (19% share and 4,895 units) leads followed by the Toyota Hulix (19% share and 4,786 units) and then the Mitsubishi Triton (17% share and 4,461 units).

Segmentation – Growth in the Smaller SUVs

The small to medium segments accounted for 67% of June registrations and 57% share year to date.

The tops spots were the SUV medium segment with 26% share followed by SUV compact vehicles also with 22% then SUV large with 12% market share.
