120 Jobs Being Created As New World Point Chevalier Launches Major Recruitment Drive

Auckland’s newest supermarket is gearing up to open in September this year, and with it comes a wave of opportunity for locals, with around 120 new jobs to be advertised at New World Point Chevalier.

The recruitment drive has begun, with roles being advertised in stages over the coming weeks on the Foodstuffs North Island careers website.

The store is building a brand-new team across a wide range of positions - from leadership roles like Store Manager and Fresh Food Managers, to skilled specialists including deli chefs, bakers, butchers and forklift drivers, as well as frontline roles such as checkout supervisors, produce assistants, online order pickers and general team members.

Owner-Operator of New World Point Chevalier, Matthew Mullins, says the scale of the operation may surprise people.

“Supermarkets are busy, exciting businesses. When we’re open for business, we’ll have people on site from early morning until late at night. It takes a lot of great people working together to make a supermarket run smoothly.”

The team at New World Pt Chevalier will be recruited in three waves:

  1. Leadership roles. These will be filled by seasoned grocery or retail professionals.
  2. Supervisors/second-in-charge and specialist roles. Supervisor positions involve leading teams of up to 10 people, so candidates typically bring either supermarket experience or a background in people management. Strong decision-making skills and the ability to perform well under pressure are important for success in these roles. The store will also be recruiting specialist roles such as bakers, butchers and forklift drivers.
  3. General team members. Often considered the engine room of the supermarket, these roles include tasks such as shelf-filling, customer service, online order picking, and cleaning. While experience is not essential, a positive attitude and strong work ethic are key.

Foodstuffs North Island Recruitment Partner, Rachel Cusk, says now is a great time to be looking for a career in grocery.

“We’re seeing a high calibre of applicants, people from all walks of life. There are students looking for part-time hours, parents rejoining the workforce, and experienced professionals seeking a new challenge. Grocery is a great industry because there’s no one-size-fits-all career path. If you go where the opportunity takes you, the sky is the limit.”

While general team member roles don’t require prior experience, a good attitude and flexibility go a long way.

“I read thousands of job applications, and the best ones show the candidates soft skills, so you get a feel for their personality” Cusk says. “Finding out what they like to do outside of work and how they interact with people, that’s what can really make a CV memorable.”

The recruitment process will see leadership and specialist roles advertised in mid-May, followed by supervisor roles in mid-June, and general team positions shortly after. Team members will begin training around two weeks before the store opens.

“It’s like doing a jigsaw puzzle blindfolded” Mullins says. “You’re recruiting people in waves, helping them gel as a team and getting them ready to hit the ground running. But when it comes together, it’s going to be incredibly rewarding for us, and for our team.”

New World Point Chevalier will be the latest store to join the Foodstuffs North Island co-operative, and Mullins says they’re focused on being a great local employer.

“Foodstuffs has an amazing track record of helping people grow in their careers. Whether you start on the checkout or as an apprentice baker, there’s real potential here. If you’re someone who’s prepared to roll up your sleeves and work hard, this could be the start of something big.”
