Plants With Party Tricks: Quirky New Seed Subscription Launches Nationwide This Spring
Spring has arrived, and with it comes a Christchurch start-up giving New Zealanders the chance to grow plants that surprise as much as they delight. Stems of Wonder is a new seasonal subscription box filled with unusual seeds from around the world — varieties chosen not for looks alone, but for the curious ‘botanical party tricks’ they reveal once they sprout.
Some visibly move to sound waves, others change colour within hours, sprout seed pods that look like insects, smell like buttered popcorn, or grow into shapes so peculiar they could have been sketched by Dr Seuss.

“For me, these plants are part science experiment and part everyday wonder,” says founder Jo Parkin.
“The seed guides are written like character profiles, so they give you the practical steps but with enough personality that they feel like eccentric houseguests arriving on your windowsill, which makes them fun to share.”
Each Spring Wonder Box subscription ($195, or $39 a box) includes five fortnightly deliveries, beginning in September. Every box arrives with everything needed to grow the plants at home — soil, spritzer, a heat mat in the first box, easy-to-follow guides, and ten uncommon and intriguing seed varieties. Delivery is nationwide, and all seed varieties meet New Zealand biosecurity requirements and are safe to grow locally.
The project has already attracted attention, including a feature on RNZ, with feedback highlighting how the boxes spark curiosity and conversation for families and first-time growers.
Stems of Wonder is part of The Stems Project, which also includes Stems with Benefits — a Christchurch initiative selling fresh flowers in upcycled, painted tin cans. For every can of blooms sold, a can of food is donated to the Christchurch City Mission.
“There’s such a magic in seeds” Jo adds, “these tiny, unassuming things that turn into something extraordinary. It’s an everyday wonder that never really looses its appeal.”
