HAWKE’S BAY ICE CREAM MAKES THE APEC MENU

A Hawke’s Bay icon will soon be exciting the palates of world leaders.

Hawke’s Bay’s Rush Munro ice cream has been selected for dessert at the APEC Leaders’ Lunch on Monday, 13 September.

APEC New Zealand 99 Catering Coordinator David Williams visits Hastings tomorrow to decide which of Rush Munro’s famous flavours is destined for APEC Leaders.

Mr Williams will sample a number of flavours at the Rush Munro Ice Cream Gardens before deciding on one that best complements the rest of the evening’s menu.

He says Rush Munro’s incredible range of flavours and the care taken to produce its ice cream made it an obvious choice for the Leaders’ Lunch.

“I guess it’s because Rush Munro has remained a boutique operation that it’s ice cream has such an excellent reputation throughout the country.

“This is a company that combines traditional methods with innovative marketing initiatives to make the best ice cream in the country. How many other ice cream manufacturers grate fresh lemon zest from for its products while also creating out of the ordinary flavours like chilli and lime?”

Rush Munro has been run in the Hawke’s Bay since 1926. Prior to this the company was based on Auckland’s Karangahape Road. Its general manager Alastair McSporran says much of the company’s original recipes are still in production.

“We use a lot of local fruit in our ice cream,” he says.

“Our feijoa flavour has been in production for several decades and local cherries feature as well. We don’t put flavourings or colourings in the product so there’s a high percentage of fruit in the ice cream to create its flavour.”

Mr McSporran is pleased his ice cream will be making to the dessert plates of APEC Leaders next month.

“I think its fantastic that a small provincial icon can provide product for a meeting of world leaders.”

The APEC Leaders’ Lunch will be held at the Wintergarden Pavillion in the Auckland Domain.
