Pumpkin Fun In Russell
Press Release
PUMPKIN FUN IN RUSSELL
They had fun in Russell this summer growing monster pumpkins.
“With thanks to the grower of NZ’s largest pumpkin, (254kg) seed was sold to raise funds for youth projects,” said Jacqui Knight in Russell. “Many people in Russell and further afield grew giant pumpkins from ‘Dolly’. But sadly it was a warm wet season -- not ideal for growing pumpkins.”
Russell’s Stephanie Mataroa raised over $300 funds with other members of her outrigger canoe team to go to the World Championships in Townsville later this year. The Russell Scout Group and Russell Youth Group members also benefited.

The weigh-in was held at the
Russell wharf, courtesy of the BOI Swordfish Club and the
largest Merv Nickel’s 27.6kg beauty. After the weigh-in
though, came an inquiry from further afield – ‘when was the
pumpkin contest being judged?’ Late entry Ritchie Reti from
Waikare was permitted to bring his pumpkin along weighing in
at well over 50 kilos, and received a consolation
prize!
Prizes were donated by Innovation, KCCFM, MagicFM, Central Butchery and Quin Turton Sports in Kawakawa and were presented at Russell’s highly successful Fringe Festival at Pompallier on Easter Saturday.
Everyone is keen to see a bigger event next year.
