Mp3.NET.NZ - Technical Background
TECHNICAL BACKGROUND
The site was designed by Cyberelves, specifically by Stephen Judd, Derek Goodwin and Richard Doherty.
Technologies used:
Hardware: Compaq
server
Operating System: Linux
Webservers: Apache
and Boa
Database: Postgres
Custom middleware
written using Perl by Cyberelves
Reasons for choices:
-
Cost effectiveness.
The chosen software is ‘Open Source’
software with no licensing fees. The equivalent proprietary
software would have cost tens of thousands of dollars, which
a site starting up can ill afford
- Stability and
performance.
Linux and Apache have a proven performance
track record
- Popularity.
When you put together a
site, you must have confidence that other people are using
the same components. Apache is the world's most popular
webserver, Linux is a popular operating system, and many
firms have expertise in Perl, the language chosen to
implement the site.
- Speed of development.
Being
first to market was essential.
Features of the
site:
-The server is not large by the standards of large
NZ websites, but should stand up to a high visitor
load.
-mp3.net.nz has a content management framework that
lets the site’s editorial team make changes easily, without
being programmers or having to come back to Cyberelves. In
the same manner, artists can edit their own pages, and
upload their own music.
-Simple, fastloading design. A
minimalist approach to design makes life easy for
web
browsers.
