"Facing The Music" National Art Awards

"Facing The Music" National Art Awards and Exhibition 2000

Work from some foremost New Zealand artists features in The Facing the Music National Art Awards and Exhibition opening in Carterton on Friday night.

Selector/judge Judy Siers has selected from nearly 200 entries during judging on Saturday 2 September.

"This is a quality exhibition which has posed a dilemma for me as judge in making a choice from work which includes the highly professional and amateur. In the end, the standard has been set by the professional entries," Judy Siers says.

"The calibre of work alongside the award-winning entries makes this an exhibition well worth travelling to Wairarapa to see."

The six award winners will be announced at the gala opening of the exhibition in the Carterton Municipal Hall this Friday night (8 September).

The exhibition of 108 artworks, all to be for sale, includes work from artists of standing including Taranaki assemblage artist Dale Copeland, who has exhibited in Wairarapa and will have work in a New York exhibition later this year. Also in the geographic sampling is work by leading contemporary artists like print maker Julia Ellery from Wanganui, Kapiti potter Jenny Daysh, and Auckland artist Jenny Dolezel.

Among the works selected is that by award winners from past years, including Wairarapa artists Megan Campbell, Matthew Lyndon Smith and Ernie Arnold. Several artists whose work appeared in this year's Norsewear Art Awards will have work on show, including Dannevirke painter Sue Schaare. Work by a previous Telecom Regional Art Awards winner Dawn Cowl has also been selected.

Entries ranging from fabric art to mixed media and stone sculpture and more traditional media once again reflect the non media specific tradition of the awards which has developed over five years.

The Facing the Music exhibition will be open daily to the public in Carterton's Municipal Hall from Saturday 9 September until Sunday 17 September.
