NZ On Air Congratulates Homegrown Television Finalists

New Zealanders should feel great pride in the rich and diverse range of locally produced television programmes, featuring in tomorrow’s New Zealand Television Awards, according to NZ On Air Chief Executive Jo Tyndall.

New Zealand On Air has funded all of this year’s award finalists in the Entertainment Series and Comedy categories. The majority of finalists in the Children’s Television, Documentary, Maori, Factual Series and Drama Series categories are also NZ On Air funded programmes.

NZ On Air plays a significant role in the New Zealand television industry by providing funding for locally made television programmes that are original, innovative and otherwise may not be produced.

“Our funding structure encourages quality because of the competitive nature of the process. Producers and broadcasters have to pitch their best ideas against each other. The result is high quality and cost effective television,“ said Ms Tyndall.

“We are proud that so many NZ On Air funded programmes have made it to the finals of this year’s New Zealand Television Awards – and it tells us we are making a positive contribution. The television production industry is in great shape and producing an outstanding range and quality of programmes,” she said.

“Most importantly the Awards show that New Zealand viewers are enjoying excellent television – which is what it’s all about.”

The Award winners will be announced at a function in Auckland on Saturday night.
