SECOND ALBUM SET TO FOLLOW FIRST TO NET SUCCESS

Christchurch singer and performance artist Lizzie Cook is about to release her second album, an intimate affair influenced by the music of Eastern Europe, the Celts and the Cajuns.

A well-known performer around Christchurch, Cook has been carving out a name as a creator of intelligent and eclectic music that has gained recognition on the Internet music provider portal MP3.com.

Her first album, Forty Damn Years, was featured as a "hot new release" on the portal and was top of MP3.com's Zydeco charts for 12 weeks. She has featured in its Artist Spotlight, and on the Women of MP3 programme.

Cook says she puts her life on the line in every song she sings, weaving her personal experiences and insights into a form of song poetry. "I know that many people respond to the intimacy I create in my music, which I focus on supporting with an intelligent musical matrix."

Cook studied physical theatre in Paris in 1987-8 at the International School of Jacques Lecoq, playing and singing for three months at the Left Bank jazz bar, Trois Mailletz. She says the accordion is her instrument of choice because of the smoky, intimate nuances it is able to create.

"It breaks my heart when I see the accordion being used as a squeeze box, because you can coax so many emotional tones from the instrument, which it is probably why it has had so much influence in the music of the Celts and Eastern Europeans," she says.

Letter From My Heart will be released at Papergraphica Gallery, 192 Bealey Ave, Christchurch, on Saturday, November 3 from 3-6pm, featuring a garden party, afternoon relaxation, fine wine, food, music and art.
