Celebrate Wellington Design Talent

The Architectural Centre is “wrapped” that three design schools in Wellington, Victoria Univeristy, Massey University and Wellington Institue of Technology, have design students graduating from courses very soon. The potential for Wellington to become the “urban capital” of New Zealand now resides in the imagination of these design graduates.

“Wellington is very fortunate to have a pool of talented graduate designers,” says president Simon McLellan. “The demand for good design in Wellington has never been stronger than right now.”

Architecture and urban planning has given Wellington the intimate feel of a truly urban centre. However the impact that this built environment has had on people’s lives passes unnoticed. Visitors to Wellington are often amazed at the way the city has adapted to its hills and harbour.

“People are curious about Wellington’s landscape. They love to indulge in their surroundings, exploring and renewing their interest among the city’s beauty.”

The Centre was instrumental in providing an Architectural School in Wellington. The Centre ran evening classes and professional studio experience in the 1950’s that provided the platform for the inauguration of the architectural design school in Wellington. Many practitioners now at the pinnacle of their career claim an association with the Architectural Centre.

We hope the next generation of Architects, urban designers and others who choose the language of architecture will extend and nurture the curiosity of Wellington’s city.
