Steven Kennedy President MotorSport NZ

Media Release

Wednesday, 30 October 2002

Statement from Steven Kennedy, President MotorSport New Zealand Inc

“MotorSport New Zealand will not proceed with a proposed review of the penalty imposed on a competitor in the Propecia Rally New Zealand. The competitor failed to stop when a red cross was shown at the scene of an accident. He was fined $US5000 by the event stewards.

"MotorSport New Zealand has the power to review any penalties imposed by the stewards.

"After further consideration of the situation given its international status it was determined that while there was jurisdiction to hold a hearing, the ambiguity of the different rules had to be interpreted in the competitors favour. Accordingly the matter has been withdrawn.

“The actions of the competitor were unacceptable in a sport where there is so much focus on competitor safety, however, that was recognised and dealt with by the stewards of the meeting and reflected in the quantum of the fine that was imposed.”

“As a result of this decision the NZ Rally Championship results have been confirmed and the matter is now closed.”
