Spatch, Dexterity & Shred… What?

If you enjoy a casual kick, want to learn a few new tricks or check out the art of freestyle footbag from international champs, then come down to Cuba Mall at 8pm on Friday 21 February for an evening of insane footbag fun.

Footbag is also known as hacky sack, and Fringe NZ and Seapa are bringing the hacky culture to the streets with the free Fringe NZ Seapa Footbag Jam.

“There’ll be DJ’s and prizes for kicking it in Cuba Mall to get local footbag amateurs and fanatics involved in some summer style madness,” said Tim Renner, Fringe NZ Director.

Fringe NZ is bringing Ryan ‘The Regulator’ Mulroney, two-time world footbag champ to Wellington to showcase the creativity and style of his freestyle moves.

“Freestyle is the artistic form of footbag,” said Mulroney. “It can be a combination of difficult moves the eye can hardly follow, or it can be smooth and flowing, like it’s in slow motion.”

After the relaxed fun of the Footbag Jam, get on down to the Te Papa Amphitheatre on Sunday 23 February at noon for the Seapa National Footbag Finals.

As well as Mulroney, Fringe NZ has brought Australian X Games champ Lynton Stephens to exhibit his wicked Freestyle artistry and mind boggling footbag speed.

These two international stars and a bevy of kiwi talent (including New Zealand Nationals winner Adrian Dick) will exhibit big tricks, new moves and choreographed routines before competition for the title of New Zealand Footbag Champion begins.

“I love that you can have a tournament with hundreds of people all hanging out and having a good time just to kick the sack” says Mulroney.

The Fringe NZ Seapa Footbag gigs are proudly supported by Wellington's Waterfront, Seapa Hacky and Music City.

So many elements of Herbert’s novel have since become tropes of popular SciFi that Villeneuve’s film sometimes seems deceptively derivative. What makes all this nonsense essential viewing is his astonishing visual sensibility. More>>

Very few contemporary American film directors can claim to have earned the title of auteur, but for sheer visual invention and cinematic joie de vivre, there is no more consistent director working in Hollywood today than Wes Anderson. More>>

Howard Davis: Jill Trevelyan's Rita Angus

Although Angus has become one of Aotearoa’s best-loved painters, the story of her life remained little known and poorly understood before Jill Trevelyan's acclaimed and revelatory biography, which won the Non Fiction Award at the Montana New Zealand Book Awards in 2009, and has now been republished by Te Papa press.
