Once Were Warriors First Single
Once Were Warriors Release First Single
The first single from the musical Once Were Warriors, Sweet Love Song, will be released on Monday the 19th of January. The single is accompanied by a music video.
The song is inspired by Beth's taste in mush: sentimental torch songs. For which her children tease her.
Sweet Love Song, expresses Beth seeking refuge and the relationship she dreams about in sentimental music.
Composer Richard Marrett describes the song as "the type of music Beth likes: melodic, memorable and sentimental which a touch of rock coming in at the end."
The greatest challenge Marrett has had to overcome for Once Were Warriors is representing all the musical styles of the different characters and still keep it all contemporary in the context of the whole show, " we have a mixture of hip hop, reggae, torch song and a modern take on traditional Maori music, depending on who is singing, where and when."
Tina Cross who plays Beth Heke says of Sweet Love Song, "it conveys exactly what Beth is feeling: I love you - why can't you love me back the way I need you to."
Once Were Warriors the musical drama will have its world premiere in Christchurch on 2nd March. It plays at the Theatre Royal until10 March. The Dunedin season is at the Regent Theatre from 16 to 19 March. The show then returns to Christchurch from 24 March.
