Cut The Cloth And Call Me Baby

Budding Stella McCartney’s are being offered the chance of a lifetime to get a kickstart on the catwalk.

Vodafone – sponsor of the id Dunedin Fashion show – wants to find three New Zealand fashion fledglings to showcase their wares alongside those of 11 of Dunedin's top designers at the March show.

“We’re inviting anyone with a sense of fashion – no matter how wild – to turn their creative ideas into reality,” said Vodafone sponsorship portfolio manager Lisa Dowling.

“Three aspiring designers will be selected to parade their vision next to the winter collections of established style gurus such as Tanya Carlson, Nom D and Mild Red.

“The theme is “Call me baby” and how people interpret that is up to them – it could be about information, romance, provocation, sexism, seduction,” said Dowling.

“They can also design in whatever style takes their fashion fancy - streetwear, work clobber, club attire, skater, formal, historical, punk …. The options are endless.”

Entrants can draw, sketch or actually make their creation and Vodafone will do the rest.

The judges will select the top three garments made up by a dressmaker and paraded during a special mini-show at the Vodafone id Dunedin Fashion Show on Saturday March 13.

Each of the three winners, and a friend, will be flown to Dunedin to attend the show, for which they will receive backstage passes. They will also attend pre and post-show functions and receive two nights accommodation.

In addition, the winners will get to keep their outfit plus receive $1,000 to spend on clothes by designers featured in the show. To document the event, they will win a Vodafone GX 20 - Video and PXT phone.

Entries must be received by 5.00pm, Friday 13th February via the Vodafone website: www.vodafone/callmebaby.co.nz or by self-addressed envelope to: Call Me Baby, Vodafone id Dunedin, PO Box 68347, Newton, Auckland.

Dowling said: “The 2004 Vodafone id Dunedin fashion show will be the fifth and, once again, will highlight Dunedin as the edgy and innovative centre of New Zealand’s fashion scene.

“As well as showcasing our three winners, the main event – the Saturday show before 1,600 at the gothic Dunedin Railway Station – will allow people to see upcoming winter collections before they hit boutiques nationwide.”
