Marie Shannnon - Felt Works

For immediate release

Marie Shannnon. Felt works.
Sue Crockford Gallery, 27th April - 15th May 2004
2 Queen St, Auckland

In Marie Shannon's current exhibition Felt Works at the Sue Crockford Gallery, felt really does work. Cut and assembled in a variety of forms, from several styles of shoes to 50 individual handbags, Shannon makes dazzling felt objects that function doubly as both decorative everyday objects and high sculpture.

Shannon's high art apparel conjures up the image of what someone might dream about after attending a two person show of Joseph Beuys and Anni Albers. Shoes for Joseph's legendary felt suit and Anni's paintings made functional to walk away from the gallery, carrying one's everyday necessities for life safely tucked inside.

But of course Shannon has cut a well established reputation for herself in the medium of photography in this country long before she first picked up a pair of scissors in the name of art. So it is no surprise that the whole production process of these felt works has been documented in a series of silver gelatin limited edition photographs to be exhibited alongside the actual objects. Shannon presents the process as art object and then turns everything else upside down again by showing a traditional craft item as art, through the medium of photography.

Shannon first began exhibiting in Auckland in 1983 and has work held in most major public collections in this country.

Marie Shannon will attend the opening. Please contact Isha Welsh, gallery manager, for further information.
