Artstation celebrates Matariki 2004 - Pataka3

MEDIA RELEASE

28 June 2004

Artstation celebrates Matariki 2004
through Pataka3 exhibition

Matariki 2004 Mâori New Year Festival is coming to Artstation through the Pataka3 exhibition, a collaboration by artists Tuhi Hollis, Lawrence Pook and Nooroa Tapuni.

The exhibition, running from 6 to 22 July, links Matariki’s seasonal celebrations and rituals to the Western presentation of cultural identities in art.

Crates used for storing artwork are set amongst the artists’ works, which include deconstructed New Zealand flags. The way the exhibition is set up signifies that the art itself is balanced between its exhibition and its disappearance into storage.

Artist Tuhi Hollis says: “Matariki allows the expression of our cultural diversity. Pataka3 likens seasonal aspects of Matariki, like harvesting and planting, to the way art is exhibited and collected.”

Pataka3 is part of the Matariki 04 Maori New Year Festival. The exhibition is one of 99 Matariki Festival events running regionwide.
