Exhibition of concept designs of artwork

Exhibition of concept designs of artwork for living street

Three Christchurch artists will exhibit their concept designs for integrated artwork for Creyke Road in the School of Fine Arts Gallery at the University of Canterbury, 19-23 July.

Integrated artworks are conceived especially for, or as part of a site, and form part of the built environment. They can be functional.

Artists Fiona Gunn, Phil Price and Mark Whyte, were asked to respond to a design brief which required up to six designs for artwork for locating at specific sites along Creyke Road. The artworks are to create a welcoming feel for the community and visitors, and provide a journey of discovery along the street.

The public are able to offer feedback on the designs while visiting the exhibition. The project selection team will decide, by 23 July, which concept design will be implemented.

Creyke Road has been developed by Christchurch City Council as one of the city’s “Living Streets”.

The Living Streets concept acknowledges that our streets serve a range of functions – providing valuable and unique areas of community space, as well as providing for movement or travel. Living Streets aim to create a living city where a variety of road environments support and encourage a better quality of life and a greater range of community and street activity.

Media are invited to attend the exhibition opening, on Friday 16 July. The artists will be available to discuss their designs with media from 4-5pm. The official opening of the exhibition starts at 5pm.
