Craft/Object Art Fellowship Call For Applications

Creative New Zealand Media release

Date: 15 November 2004

Creative New Zealand calls for applications to its 2005 Craft/Object Art Fellowship

Creative New Zealand is calling for applications to the 2005 Creative New Zealand Craft/Object Art Fellowship, worth $65,000. Established last year, this annual fellowship is the largest craft/object art fellowship or award available in New Zealand.

The Fellowship is open to mid-career and senior New Zealand practitioners, curators and writers - ranging from jewellers, weavers and ceramicists through to furniture-makers and designers. The closing date is 25 March 2005 and the recipient will be required to complete a project over a 12-month period.

The Fellowship was established in response to recommendations in a strategy for the craft/object art sector, developed by Creative New Zealand in close consultation with the sector.

Applicants should demonstrate that they have a strong national reputation and have been critically acclaimed for the work they have produced. Creative New Zealand will be inviting external peer assessors to assist with the decision-making process.

This year's recipient was Waiheke Island artist Malcolm Harrison, who designed and created a major multi-media artwork in the Galleria of the refurbished Parliament Buildings. When he received the fellowship, Harrison said: "I feel total freedom to focus solely on my new project for a whole year. It's also wonderful to have my peers say, 'You've done a good job and just keep going'."
