Kiwi Brass Star appointed to Director of Education

Kiwi Brass Star appointed to Director of Education

The Brass Bands Association of New Zealand is delighted to announce the appointment of David Bremner as their new Director of Education in 2005. Bremner replaces Kiwi stalwart Kevin Jarrett MBE of Wanganui who has retired.

Bremner comes from a strong family of brass players who were originally based in New Plymouth. His father Trevor is a fine soloist competing in New Zealand and Australia with great success, including this year winning the New Zealand cornet championship for a record 10th time.

David is currently the principal trombone of the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra and has just been chosen as principal trombone of the 2005 National Band of New Zealand to perform at Kerkrade in July. His regular band is the current champion band of New Zealand, Dalewool Auckland Brass.

He has been a finalist in the NZ Young Musician of the Year, a champion of champion (in 1999 beating his father to second place) and he holds a Batchelor of Music with Honours from Victoria University Wellington and Master of Music from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music.

Spokesman for the Brass Bands Association Owen Melhuish says “we are indeed excited about what David can bring to our movement as a young star who has a reputation outside of banding from his NZSO role. I am sure that he will bring a new dimension with his planned workshops and demonstration concerts which will coincide with his NZSO engagements nationwide. We also thank Kevin Jarrett for his untiring efforts over a long period.”

David has recently been seen on New Zealand television as part of an advertising campaign featuring previous AMP Scholarship awards. So you could say he is the Kiwi “pin-up boy” of banding.
