Top Six Musicians Selected

The jury of the third Michael Hill International Violin Competition has chosen the top six semi-finalists, from a field of 18, to go through to Round III of the competition, a chamber music round in Auckland on Wednesday 8 and Thursday 9 June. After assessing the 18 semi-finalists’ solo and piano-accompanied performances during an intense three days of competition in Queenstown this weekend, the jury, after much deliberation, selected the following six violinists:

Liana Gourdjia (Russia)
Wen-Lei Gu (China)
Yvonne Lam (USA)
Feng Ning (China)
Andrew Wan (Canada)
Bartosz Filip Woroch (Poland)

Andrew Wan of Canada was also awarded Best Performer of earth, air, water… the New Zealand commissioned composition by David Farquhar.

Each of the six violinists will perform a Trio with Ashley Brown (cello) and Sarah Watkins (piano) of the New Zealand Trio. Three finalists will be announced at the conclusion of the session on Thursday 9 June, who will each perform a Violin Concerto with the Auckland Philharmonia on Saturday 11 June.
