Judy Bailey Stepping Down From TV One News

Judy Bailey Stepping Down From TV One News

Judy Bailey is stepping down from her front-line news presenting role.

TVNZ Chief Executive, Ian Fraser, said today that TVNZ has decided not to renew her contract. "I hope to explore fresh options with her for next year, in roles that continue to make the best use of a major talent."

Judy has been presenting ONE News for 18 years, making her TVNZ's longest serving news presenter.

Head of News and Current Affairs, Bill Ralston, said it was rare in television to find a presenter of Judy Bailey's quality and professionalism.

"This marks the end of an era in TVNZ News. She has enjoyed a record run as a presenter and this was largely a reflection of the rapport she built up with viewers."

Judy Bailey said the ONE News presenter role had been a fantastic job. "It's been very special to be part of so many New Zealanders' lives for so long – but it is time to move on – I'm ready for a new challenge."

After a holiday, which has been long planned, Judy will be back to complete the year.

Judy joined NZBC (now TVNZ) in 1971, and was a reporter for several news organisations and current affairs programmes during her first 10 years with the company.

>From 1980 to 1987, Judy presented the weekday evening Auckland regional news programme, Top Half, with John Hawkesby.

In 1987 she moved to co presenting the weeknight national news programme, initially with Neil Billington and then with Richard Long. In 2004 she became the sole presenter.

Mr Fraser said that a decision on the ONE News format and presenter/s would be made later in the year.
