Special Late Night Opening At City Gallery Wellington

Book this into your diary now! On Thursday 13 October, City Gallery Wellington will be open from 10am through to 10pm, giving you a great chance to visit our current exhibitions 'Small World, Big Town: Contemporary Art from Te Papa' and 'Jane Pountney - Wade in the Water' after-hours.

In addition to the extended hours, we've also scheduled two special events. First up, Gregory O'Brien, City Gallery Wellington curator and well-known writer and poet, will give a talk on New Zealand literature, with a special focus on the work of Janet Frame.

Continuing our popular Late Night Sessions gigs, from 7pm onwards we invite you to wander the galleries while soaking in the sounds of local musicians Dirac and Group 5, as they perform live in the Gallery foyer.

GREGORY O'BRIEN: Where The Alphabet Ends Thursday 13 October, 5:30-6:30pm. No booking required.

Co-curator of 'Small World, Big Town: Contemporary Art from Te Papa', City Gallery Wellington curator Gregory O'Brien shines his torch on the 'outer limits' to explore New Zealand literature that takes us beyond the boundaries, most particularly the writing of Janet Frame, the quintessential model for New Zealand explorers of such territory.

DIRAC & GROUP FIVE Thursday 13 October, 7-10pm

Wander through the exhibitions while soaking in the electronic sounds of Dirac and Group Five. The Dirac project emits pop-saturated noise textures, seeking to evade both the constraining myths of rock and dance music, and the clinical austerity of 'academic' works. Looked at another way, David is too lazy either to write proper songs or finish university like his mother wanted him to. Meanwhile, Group Five will lay down sounds as raked as a rock garden, patterning a space out of funk beats, field recordings, sonar, spirituals, and a pile of damaged records.
