The Inside Scoop Direct From Fatso: And The Oscar Winner Is…

Well we all know who the nominees are; what we all really want to know is who is going to run away with those gold statues on Sunday! Fatso.co.nz decided that their customers, as discerning movie lovers, were best suited to decide who they thought would (or should) take away the gold this weekend. As an incentive to vote Fatso is giving away three ultimate Oscar winners DVD prize packs; each pack contains the best picture winners from the last five Oscars. The only catch is you have to guess the Oscar winners for the five main awards correctly.

The polls are showing a neck to neck race on a few of the awards; Joaquin Phoenix (Walk the Line) and Philip Hoffman (Capote) are currently tied at 32% of the total votes each for best actor in a leading role. Ang Lee and his film Brokeback Mountain are the breakaway leaders for best picture and best director, currently leading with 72% and 64 % of the total votes.

Jake Gyllenhaal (Brokeback Mountain) looks set to walk away with best actor in a supporting role, currently beating George Clooney (Syriana) and Paul Giamatti (Cinderella Man) by sizeable margin.

It is too close to call yet on the best actress in a leading role; Reese Witherspoon (Walk the Line) currently holds a 3% margin over Charlize Theron (North Country) but with three days left of voting Reese isn’t guaranteed the gold yet!

Well this is what the Fatso subscribers have voted so far; if you are a Fatso subscriber and you haven’t voted yet visit http://www.fatso.co.nz/ and have your say. Who knows, if you pick all five winners you might being taking home an Oscar prize pack of your own!

So many elements of Herbert’s novel have since become tropes of popular SciFi that Villeneuve’s film sometimes seems deceptively derivative. What makes all this nonsense essential viewing is his astonishing visual sensibility. More>>

Howard Davis: The French Dispatch - Wes Anderson's New Yorker Tribute

Very few contemporary American film directors can claim to have earned the title of auteur, but for sheer visual invention and cinematic joie de vivre, there is no more consistent director working in Hollywood today than Wes Anderson. More>>

Howard Davis: Jill Trevelyan's Rita Angus

Although Angus has become one of Aotearoa’s best-loved painters, the story of her life remained little known and poorly understood before Jill Trevelyan's acclaimed and revelatory biography, which won the Non Fiction Award at the Montana New Zealand Book Awards in 2009, and has now been republished by Te Papa press.
