Love across cultures explored in free author talk

Love across cultures explored in free author talk

Auckland City Libraries and Whitcoulls present Marguerite Van Geldermalsen, author of the fascinating memoir “Married to a Bedouin”, in a free author talk at the Central City Library on Monday 12 June.

‘"Where are you staying?" the Bedouin asked. "Why you not stay with me tonight – in my cave?" He seemed enthusiastic – and we were looking for adventure.’

As a young New Zealand backpacker travelling with a friend through the Middle East in 1978, Marguerite found her adventure in the ancient city of Petra. She fell in love not only with the Bedouin souvenir-seller who became her husband but also with his lifestyle, culture and religion and went to live with him in the fabled cliff-dwellings of Petra, “the rose red city, half as old as time.”

This is her story of a love across cultures that endured until her husband’s death in 2002.
