Netball NZ reviews findings

Netball NZ reviews findings

Today Netball New Zealand announced the key findings of a comprehensive review of its premier domestic Franchise competition, The National Bank Cup.

The review, which looked at opportunities to invigorate and enhance the competition, was commissioned by NNZ. The report acknowledges the success of The National Bank Cup, but suggests change is warranted to ensure the future growth of netball. Three competition options have been put forward to develop netball at this level.

In broad terms the three options are:
1. An enhanced version of the current competition
2. A blended version involving Australia, whereby each country runs its current competition and a play-off is held between the best teams in New Zealand and Australia
3. A fully-fledged Trans-Tasman competition

Netball New Zealand Chair Don Mackinnon said NNZ would now scope each of these options to determine the best format of the Franchise competition.

“In 2008 there will be significant change to the current competition.

“The review has given NNZ a solid base to work from and we are obliged to explore these options further to sustain netball into the future.

“Netball needs a financially viable premier competition at this level, and we’re committed to investigating this thoroughly.

“In relation to the Trans-Tasman options outlined in the review, we will also be working closely with Netball Australia,” said Mackinnon.

Mackinnon said NNZ expected to confirm by the end of the year which option it would be pursuing for the 2008 season.

The review was independently conducted by PricewaterhouseCoopers, who have conducted competition reviews for other codes including the New Zealand Rugby Union.

The National Bank Cup would remain in its current format for next season (2007).

The report has included input from the Franchises, Regions, players, coaches and other stakeholders currently involved in The National Bank Cup competition.
