Record number of entries for Handle the Jandal

A record number of entries for the 2006 Handle the Jandal music video competition have flooded the Active Towers this week.

Ninety-three entries were received for Radio Active 89FM's Handle the Jandal D.I.Y New Zealand Music Video Awards 2006, in time for the Tuesday night, August 1 deadline.

The Handle The Jandal Awards, in its ninth year, are a celebration of New Zealand filmmakers and New Zealand's do-it-yourself culture through the promotion of New Zealand music. Every film must be self-funded and feature New Zealand music.

Handle the Jandal event manager Samantha Hayes said the volume of entries show how winning a Golden Jandal is something to be coveted by creative New Zealanders.

What was a trickle of tapes turned into a flood over the past few weeks, said Ms Hayes.

It's awesome to see how much interest there is from all over New Zealand to get handling on the jandal.

I

We've already had a peek at a few there's some bizarre stuff in the box of entries it's like number eight weird going on.”

Ms Hayes said she had received entries from as far south as Dunedin, all the way through to Auckland, with regional centres such as New Plymouth and Matamata sending entries.

In the nine years that Radio Active 89FM has hosted the Handle the Jandal awards we've seen it grow to be a truly nationwide event, she said.

There's some craziness from all corners of New Zealand and hopefully they'll springboard from Handle the Jandal onto the world stage like Rollo Wendlock who ended up shooting videos for the Prodigy.”

Some of the entries this year include music from Rhombus, HDU, Trinity Roots, Shapeshifter, Charlie Ash, Ghostplane, Luke Buda and Twinset. The awards will be held at Wellington's Embassy Theatre on Wednesday, September 20.
