A Matter of Life and Death

A Matter of Life and Death

"Rossen Milanov is a conductor who has already achieved a great deal in his career and for whom I predict a great future."
[Philadelphia Orchestra Music Director Christoph Eschenbach]

The final concert in the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra's Vero Series on Thursday 14 September takes the audience on a journey through the music of love, lust, death and the supernatural.

Under the baton of maestro Rossen Milanov, memorable works such as Strauss's Don Juan, Sibelius's Valse Triste, Wagner's Liebestod from Tristan und Isolde, Saint-Saëns' Bacchanale from Samson et Dalila, and Dukas' The Sorcerer's Apprentice feature in an evening of great classics full of passion and darkness. The evening will be enlightened by the mana of New Zealand actor George Henare, who will host the concert and lead the audience on a journey through the grand passions and macabre visions of the great composers.

Described by the Chicago Tribune as one who "bears watching by anyone who cares about the future of music", Rossen Milanov is Associate Conductor of the Philadelphia Orchestra and, in his native city of Sofia, Chief Conductor of the Bulgarian National Radio Orchestra. Additionally, he is Music Director of both the New Symphony Orchestra in Bulgaria and the Haddonfield Symphony in New Jersey - of the latter he has shaped the ensemble to become one of the premier training orchestras for young musicians, drawing its members from prominent conservatories including Curtis, Juilliard, Peabody and the Manhattan School of Music.
