Elizabeth Thomson works primarily as a relief sculptor, marrying the two-dimensional concerns of a painter with the three dimensional preoccupations of a sculptor. Alert to the optical effects as well as the cultural histories implicit in her work, Gregory O’Brien will discuss the way, for Thomson, a flat wall can become a vast expanse of visual and conceptual possibility. He also looks at other contemporary relief sculptors—among them Rosalie Gascoigne and Denis O’Connor—and their different ways of engaging with science, history, notions of the monumental and the poetic reinvention of the everyday.
