Rockin’ Rod’s Fifth
We still love him, even if Rachel doesn’t.
Rockin’ Rod Stewart makes the biggest leap to #1 of 2006 with a 29-place jump straight to the top of the NZ Albums Chart. And it looks to be a world first for the veteran as Still The Same: Great Rock Classics Of Our Time is yet to gain its UK, US or Australian release.
Rod the Mod’s chart-topping tally is now five, this being his first penthouse dweller since the ‘70s. His last was a Greatest Hits collection 27 years ago.
The lead single from the new covers set, Have You Ever Seen The Rain?, moves up to #3 on the RadioScope Easy Chart – just one of many past hits to be given the Rod Stewart make-over treatment. It’s A Heartache was originally a hit for Welsh woman Bonnie Tyler, whose raspy voice ironically once earned her the label ‘a female Rod Stewart’.
Rod’s never had a #1 single here though. He’s made it as runner-up four times - 1976’s Tonight’s The Night (1 week at #2, on the chart for 23 weeks), 1977’s I Don’t Want To Talk About It (2 weeks at #2, 27 weeks), You’re In My Heart (4 weeks at #2, 15 weeks) and 1978’s Do Ya Think I’m Sexy? (1 week, 16 weeks).
His ‘signature tune’ Sailing charted twice, reaching #3 in 1975 and spending 24 weeks on the chart, then entering again in 1978 hitting #16 and surviving a further 14 weeks.

And The Tui Goes To…
The 2006 New Zealand Music Awards will be announced in Auckland tonight, and among the finalists are two who set longevity records on this week’s chart.
First up, four-time Tui winners last year, Welli’s Fat Freddy’s Drop. Their Based On A True Story racks up its 76th week in the Albums list – which draws them level with Split Enz’s True Colours as the longest charting album by a local group. And FFD pips Enz on the weeks at #1 count by 7 weeks to 2.
The all-time local longevity champ, however, is Bic Runga’s Beautiful Collision which spent 108 weeks on the chart. (Bic’s already won a Tui this year as Best Producer for Birds and is up for three on the night). Fat Freddy’s Drop are finalists in the People’s Choice section.
Another nominee, already an award winner at the APRA Silver Scrolls, is Don McGlashan’s Bathe In The River, which racks up its 33rd week on the Singles Chart to become the second longest charting local single ever!
The America’s Cup collaboration by All Of Us, Sailing Away, holds the record of 38 weeks. Bathe moves back up to #22 this week. Perhaps the Tuis will give it the legs to take the longevity record! It’s up for Single Of The Year and looks a good bet for highest-selling single.

The New Singles
#7 Scissor Sisters - I Don’t Feel Like Dancin’
Ta dah! New York’s 70s-style Scissor Sisters crack the NZ Top 10 for the first time and grab their biggest hit here. I Don’t Feel Like Dancin’ waltzes straight into #7, having already topped the chart in the UK and Australia. The track’s #19 on the RadioScope100 while their album Ta-Dah! sits at #15 on the Albums list.

#21 48May - Nervous Wreck
Local lads 48May precede the 2007 release of their sophomore set Streetlights And Shadows with lead single Nervous Wreck, new at #21 this week. It follows their two previous hits Leather & Tattoos (#14) and Home By 2 (#11) from their 2004 debut The Mad Love, which peaked at #19.

#40 Hinder - Lips Of An Angel
It’s hello to Austin Winkler (vocals), Joe ‘Blower’ Garvey (lead guitar), Mike Rodden (bass), Mark King (rhythm guitar) and Cody Hansen (drums) who are collectively known as Hinder, a group from Oklahoma City. They gain their first NZ hit with their former US #3 Lips Of An Angel, new at #40 on airplay alone (it’s fresh into the RadioScope100 Top 10 this week). Together since 2002, Hinder’s debut Extreme Behaviour dropped in September last year Stateside, going platinum. It’s out here next week.

The New Albums
#17 Katherine Jenkins - Living A Dream
Welsh school teacher Katherine Jenkins won Album of the Year at the 2006 Classical Brit Awards with her sophomore album Living A Dream. This week that set gives her highest new entry honours on the NZ Albums Chart, her first chart appearance here.

#37 Trivium - The Crusade
Trivium hail from Orlando, Florida, and though their album title is very similar to Scribe’s #1 set The Crusader that’s where the similarities end. Trivium is loud in the metal sense. The Crusade is their third album, their second for Roadrunner Records and their first to chart here.

#39 Hammond Gamble - Recollection
On the road supporting Th’ Dudes and Hello Sailor on the Radio Hauraki 40th Birthday Tour, Hammond Gamble gains his first charting album in 23 years. His first taste of the NZ Albums Chart came when his band Street Talk’s self-titled debut spent a week in the list in March 1979. The follow-up, Battleground Of Fun, got to #21 in June the following year before the band broke up. His solo chart debut was December 1980 when Hammond Gamble Band spent 10 weeks in the list, getting as high as #32. October 1983 saw his highest charting set to date as Every Whisper Shouts got to #19. Gamble has the distinction of being the voice of the only song to hit #1 on the Singles Chart on two separate occasions as The Red Nose Band’s You Make The Whole World Smile made the top in 1992, dropped off the chart, then went back to the summit place exactly one year later.
