Taking Art Across the World

When artists George Nuku and Tracey Tawhiao took part in a groundbreaking exhibition in England, it wasn’t just a physical journey for them both.

The highs and lows of preparing for the event also become an emotional and spiritual journey for the talented two, as revealed in the new documentary TOI MAORI ON THE MAP, screening on Maori Television on Wednesday November 1 at 8.30 PM.

For George, it’s a chance to display part of life-size Perspex wharenui at the University of Cambridge Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology’s Pasifika Styles show in May this year.

And for Tracey, the exhibition’s theme of relating modern art to historic taonga at the museum means it’s the perfect showcase for her colourful symbolic paintings.

Both artists, who share a studio in Auckland, have strong personalities and definite ideas about what the exhibition means to them – meaning fireworks as well as fine art!

As the big day draws near, George and Tracey, as well as the curators at the museum, work hard to make sure everything is in place to honour the taonga of ancestors, and bring modern and ancient together in one dynamic exhibition.

The big question is - will it all go as planned?

Find out when TOI MAORI ON THE MAP screens in Maori Television’s New Zealand Documentary slot, Pakipumeka Aotearoa, on Wednesday November 1 at 8.30 PM.
