Lightning Strikes Punter In Banks Peninsula

Lightning does strike twice.

For the second year running, it was a punter at the Banks Peninsula Harness meeting who struck it lucky in the Springfresh New Zealand Racing Board’s Destination Summer Holiday Racing programme today.

Punter Alan Gibson made his own selections in the Six Pack race to take home the Ford Focus car top prize in addition to more than $11,000 in winnings all for a $30 investment.

The thrilled winner declares this will be the best New Year ever.

But there’s still another chance of winning a car in the remaining Destination Summer Holiday Racing events coming up around New Zealand.

“What we wanted to do through Destination Summer Holiday Racing was re-introduce New Zealand families to the fun that a day at the races can provide,” says New Zealand Racing Board On-course Marketing and Events Manager Janice Hill. “But like everyone providing an entertainment product, the racing industry needed to ensure consistent quality in the experience the racegoer could expect.

“Just as in any franchise, you have to deliver the same high standards everywhere. And we wanted to add extra excitement – like the Six Pack with the icing on the top like the car Mr Gibson is driving home.”

A key factor in the achievement of those goals, Ms Hill says, is the combined commitment of both race clubs across all racing codes and sponsors who could see the potential of being involved with the iconic New Zealand pastime of racing.

“It’s not about betting,” Ms Hill says, “although obviously, there’s the thrill of picking a winner and the programme does include a number of fun and inexpensive ways new-time racegoers can try their luck.

“It’s so much more about entertainment, services and facilities that come together for a great day out; and a good value day out.”
