Te Papa’s Lord Of The Rings Exhibition Opens In A Coruña, Spain

Te Papa’s hugely successful Lord of the Rings Motion Picture Trilogy – The Exhibition opens at the Fundación Caixa Galicia in A Coruña and Santiago de Compostela, Spain on Saturday 23 June. The official opening will take place on the evening of 22 June, opening to the public the following day.

The Lord of the Rings Motion Picture Trilogy – The Exhibition was developed by Te Papa in conjunction with New Line Cinema over a two-year period. It broke all previous attendance records for a museum exhibition in New Zealand with over 325,000 visitors at Te Papa. The exhibition has received well over 1.3 million visits worldwide, travelling to London, Singapore, Boston, Sydney, Houston, Indiana and, most recently, Berlin.

After opening in Spain (on the same day as the commencement of sailing for the America’s Cup in Valencia), it will be a highlight of the International Animation Festival Mundos Digitales (4 – 7 July), a world-renowned animation, special effects and video game conference that will be attended by representatives from Weta Workshop.

Elements of the exhibition will also feature in Fundación Caixa Galicia’s satellite venue in Santiago de Compostela (about 50km southwest of A Coruña). This smaller exhibition will be staged next to the Cathedral, the recognised site of the remains of St James the Apostle and the ultimate destination of over 100,000 pilgrims travelling one of the world's most famous pilgrim routes during the northern summer.

The Lord of the Rings Motion Picture Trilogy – The Exhibition is interactive and immersive. Featuring film footage, props, costumes and artefacts from the movies, the exhibition gives visitors a unique opportunity to explore the fantastic world created for the film trilogy and the groundbreaking technology behind the movies.

The exhibition will show at Fundación Caixa Galicia’s two venues in A Coruña and Santiago de Compostela from Saturday 23 June until Sunday 16 September 2007.
