Weird World of Sport Contest Goes to the Dog

Weird World of Sport Contest Goes to the Dog

A new extreme sport involving a piece of plywood and a pet dog named Bruce has been voted New Zealand’s top new sport in the finals of Weird World of Sports.

‘Bruce Boarding’, a new take on wakeboarding, beat 95 other entries for the top prize, a round-the-world trip for four.

Bruce Boarding, named after the entrant’s pet dog, Bruce, is a take off on wakeboarding. But instead of using a power boat to tow boarders across the water, Bruce’s owners harnessed up their canine companion to tow them along a stretch of shallow surf.

The competition, led by Pulp Sport’s comedy duo Bill and Ben, asked entrants to invent weird new sports, and videotape or photograph themselves playing the sport for posting on the Weird World of Sports website.

“We chose Bruce Boarding to go into the final six because we liked its originality and thought it looked fun to play,” said Jamie Linehan, also known as Bill.

Weird World of Sports has been about getting creative and having a laugh,” said sidekick Ben. We’ve seen people putting their manhood on the line, hurling themselves into bushes, chicks blowing each others’ balls, and more weird and extreme ways of using sporting equipment than we ever could have imagined. You don’t have to be sporty to enjoy sports – we’re living proof of that. It’s about getting out there, being inventive and having fun.”

The Auckland–based Bruce Boarding team topped a long list of creative entries, including Human Gripball (a version of volleyball played in Velcro suits), Extreme Freebowling (10-pin bowling played in unlikely places), Plank (a contest of balance and wits) and Underwater Chess (you only have one breath to make your move) to take the top spot and win a round-the-world trip for four plus spending money.
