Top Get2Go regional teams prepare for Great Barrier Island final

Outdoor team adventure and action are on the agenda for Year 9 and 10 students preparing for the SPARC Get2Go Challenge grand final on Great Barrier Island next week.

Teams of eight students from 10 North Island schools will spend the week participating in a variety of outdoor activities that help them develop both physical and mental skills, including sea kayaking, sailing, rock climbing and orienteering.

Each of the teams participating in the Get2Go Challenge final event took out the top spot in the one-day Get2Go Challenge held in their respective region earlier this year. Around 850 students took part in the regional Get2Go Challenges held across the North Island. These involved rock climbing, mountain biking, kayaking and orienteering.

SPARC (Sport and Recreation New Zealand) sponsor the Get2Go Challenge, which is run by the Sir Edmund Hillary Outdoor Pursuits Centre (OPC). The SPARC Get2Go Challenge is the ultimate outdoor team adventure, designed to encourage Year 9 and 10 students to get active in New Zealand’s great outdoors.

OPC event organiser, Darren Ashmore, will coordinate the SPARC Get2Go Challenge grand final, which will have teams running, climbing, swimming, navigating, kayaking and rafting over and around Great Barrier Island.

SPARC Sports Ambassador, Cory Hutchings, will be at Great Barrier Island on Monday and Tuesday to give participating students encouragement and support.

SPARC is the Crown Entity responsible for promoting, encouraging and supporting sport and physical recreation in New Zealand. For more details, visit www.sparc.org.nz.
