Chinese New Year Screening on Triangle and Stratos

Chinese New Year Phenomenon Screening on Triangle Television and Stratos

New Zealanders will join an estimated international audience of 700 million next week when Triangle Television and Stratos broadcast the phenomenal Chinese New Year celebrations live from Beijing.

This incredible cultural highlight, direct from China's CCTV, is a breathtaking spectacle of drama, comedy, acrobatics, opera, song, dance, innovation and tradition, which has drawn record-breaking audiences annually since the early 1990s.

Each year this glittering extravaganza brings homes and businesses across the Chinese mainland to a standstill – and even in tiny villages, where television is rare, people gather together to watch as a community.

Last year the show attracted a wide audience on Triangle Television in Auckland and Wellington. This year, as well as screening on Triangle's Auckland and Wellington stations, the show will be broadcast on Stratos Television, making it available to Freeview Channel 21 and Sky Channel 89 viewers throughout the country.

Triangle and Stratos Television Chief Executive Officer Jim Blackman says: "Anyone who has experienced Chinese New Year anywhere in the world will know what a fantastic celebration it is. It is nothing short of amazing, and has huge appeal to New Zealand's Chinese communities as well as to many other Kiwi viewers."

The broadcast has been arranged by Triangle Television and Stratos Television in association with the Embassy of the People's Republic of China and the New Zealand Charitable Association (a support group for new immigrants) in response to a call from Chinese students and those without a digital television service who want desperately to join in the celebrations from their homeland.
