Happy, cnr Tory and Vivian Sts, Wellington

Wellington's newest and most maverick dance company, Critical Art Body, announces a preview season of Before the Body was Broken, the group's first full scale production.

Critical Art Body is a dance company dedicated to exploring new ways of developing and presenting dance works. The group is comprised of dancers, actors, musicians and filmmakers. The group's strength is drawn from its members' long experience in performance and their widely varied backgrounds and training. Training ranges from traditional ballet to ancient Indian performance forms, from boxing to contemporary philosophy.

Before the Body was Broken is a dance theatre work developed from the artistic images and literary history of martyrdom; contemporary and historical, religious and secular. It explores through movement and music the experiences of a single martyr prior to his martyrdom.

Critical Art Body's choreographer, Noel Meek, has been described as "a very fine performer," by Kalamandalam Kesavan, Kathakali teacher, and "an asset to Wellington's creative community" by Arts Foundation of New Zealand executive director, Simon Bowden. He has studied contemporary dance, Tango, boxing, butoh (Japanese avant-garde dance), Kathakali (traditional South Indian dance-drama) as well as a variety of theatrical styles including avant-garde forms (including work with Red Mole), street theatre, mask, puppetry and clown. He has performed and taught performance for the last 15 years in New Zealand and recently in India. He currently teaches performance classes for groups with intellectual disabilities. This winter he has performances in New York and with the legendary San Francisco Mime Troupe in California.
