Tenants’ Art On Display

MEDIA RELEASE 10 June 2008

Tenants’ Art On Display

Artwork created by residential tenants of the Christchurch City Council goes on display at Our City O-Tautahi this Thursday (12 June).

The Council’s City Housing unit organised a creative art and photography competition - open to all tenants in the Council’s two and a half thousand units. Selected images from the competition will be displayed at Our City O-Tautahi for the next month.

“The exhibition gives us the opportunity to showcase and celebrate the talents and diversity of our tenants,” says Mayor Bob Parker.

Tenants were invited to enter paintings, photographs and three dimensional works and sculptures that represented the theme “My Place, My Neighbourhood.”

“There is an impressive and moving range of interpretations of the theme,” says Mr Parker. “There are paintings of children, friends, neighbours and pets; photographs of gardens; as well as landscapes and other representations of landmarks found in tenants’ neighbourhoods.

“This is effectively the inside story on one of our city’s most established communities - residents of the Council’s social housing. Long lasting friendships and a strong sense of community often develop in these complexes where activities such as creative art encourage a sense of belonging,” he says.

“The artworks demonstrate an extraordinary depth of talent that I’m really thrilled the Council is able to recognise in this way.”

The exhibition will be officially opened by the mayor, (who will also present category awards for the competition) on 11 June, and will be open to the public from Thursday 12 June until Saturday 19 July at Our City O-Tautahi (Monday to Saturday, 10am to 4pm).
