A vibrant cinematic mix of alchemist animation, flowering chemical explosions and fields of golden light. Kaleidoscopic commentary, floating film screens and dreams of ancient deteriorated celluloid.
FPS is Auckland's premier showcase for New Zealand's finest live film and music makers, where is the screen has no limits and anything can happen. 2008's Live Cinema program pays tribute to past pioneers of the expanded cinema movement as well as bolstering contemporary explorers. FPS gives filmmakers full right to explode the parameters of possibility and continue expanding the rich history of creative innovation and imaginative transformation that is Cinema. Witness the unpacking of "cinema" from its box and the reassembling of it into limitless formations of light and sound.

Early Experimental
Films
Harry Smith (US) and live soundtrack by Audible <
3 16mm & live music – 23mins
Harry Smith was
one of America's premier visionary film-making alchemists
who's extravagant abstract films merged the realms of art
and magic. Smith used his eccentric views of reality and art
to create complex direct-on-film animations not dissimilar
to his New Zealand predecessor Len Lye. Smith always
insisted his films where made for contemporary music so we
are pleased to present the films with a live improvised
soundtrack by experimental music purveyors Audible < 3.
Audible 3 music is deconstructed, filtered and reconstructed
but far from abstract, the trio's music abounds with
user-friendly concrete sound, absorbing pulses and humble
tones woven into an organic and subtly narrated continuum.
"Segments" - An Inflated Screen Event
Lou Cohen
(US) – 7mins
Bi-directional video projection and
balloons
How often does one get to watch a film
projected onto and through 150
balloons?
Animation and sound, produced by
rewiring the base language of computers, will be projected
from both ends of the room to catch the balloons as the
audience throws them in the air.
Lou Cohen is both
composer and animator of "Segments" (2005). In his 80's now,
he has composed music since the age of 12, studied under
John Cage and had his DIY computer experiments screened
worldwide.
'SELECTIONS &
DISTORTIONS'
Clinton Watkins
live video manipulation
and live sound - 20mins
Artist and Musician,
Clinton Watkins, will perform a selection of recent video
works and sound compositions.
His work consists of slow
repeating imagery and minimal sound to create an
amplification of selected subject matter.
The performance
will consist of utilizing circuit bent video mixing
technology to distort and corrupt video imagery with live
sound.
'goldgrid'
Kim Pieters
(Dunedin)
Video installation
Kim Pieters is
an abstract painter with a long history of commitment to
photography, improvisational film and music.
Presented in
the foyer of the Academy, her work has a dreamlike quality
which will envelope the space.
Goldgrid is part of her
continuing inquiry into chance, the trace & notions of the
sublime.
Dirt Room Tomographic
Alex
MacKinnon and Oliver Van Der Lugt.
Video
installation
A short stop-frame animation of
an old accounts book found in a hollowed out dirt room
beneath the None Gallery in Dunedin. One of many giant
receipts books that The New Zealand Drug Company left to
decompose in this subterranean archive for the past 70
years.
The patterns of mould and decay develop and
diminish as each page is revealed.
Blue
Tide, Black Water
Eve Gordon & Sam Hamilton
35mm
film. 9mins
Amid an ocean of wax one might
chance upon a garden of flowering chemicals, where
filmmakers Sam Hamilton and Eve Gordon circumnavigate
microscopic reactions to create their first epic on 35mm.
!!! plus deteriorated ancient 8mm films @
intermission !!!
