Wanganui artist wins Cavalier Bremworth Art of Glass Awards

An optically confounding two-dimensional bowl from glass artist David Traub took out the main prize at the 2008 Cavalier Bremworth Art of Glass Awards this week.

Held as part of the week long Artworks at the Hilton event in Auckland, the Art of Glass Awards attracted 70 entries in the Open section and 17 in the newly established jewellery section.

Judges John Croucher and Louis le Vaillant described David Traub’s work as as an exciting and strong work, both conceptually and technically which showed a great deal of consummate skill in the glassmaker’s craft.

David Traub emigrated to New Zealand in 1995, settling in Wanganui to head the glass programme at Wanganui Polytechnic. He left teaching a few years ago to work full-tine as a glass artist from his studio “The Glass Factory”.

David is currently in the United States and was unable to attend the Awards function to pick up his trophy and the $5000 winner’s cheque.

The winner of the jewellery section was Jenny McLeod with her Hot Chilli Wall Necklace. She received a trophy and a cheque for $1000. A merit award was also given in the Open section to Te Rongo Kirkwood for a stunning glass piece called Manwapou.
