Beatson Nearly All The Way

Maurice Beatson nearly managed to pull off a rather special feat at the Carterton Showjumping and Show Hunter Championships today.

The Dannevirke farmer won the horse grand prix on My Gollywog, and also placed third on Jedi warrior and fourth on Kiwi Relic. His march on the class only spoiled by Jason Ellmers (Eketahuna) and Millies Wish who were second.

Six of the original 12 starters went through to the jump-off over the Gary Sinclair (Upper Hutt) designed course, with Beatson double clear in 48.68 on Gollywog and Ellmers also double clear but slower, stopping the clock at 50.93.

Beatson will head to the Kelt Capital Horse of the Year Show in just over two weeks with a strong string of horses in his truck, all of whom have found great form this season.

Brad Cunningham's good form in the young rider classes continued. The Christchurch rider, in the North Island as part of his build up to the KCHoY was the only double clear round in the prestigious young rider class.

His win will give him more valuable points for the leaderboard as the season draws to a close. He and Cheltenham also finished fifth in the horse grand prix.

In the pony grand prix the day belonged to Tim Myers (Patea) and Bullseye who headed home a 13-strong field to take the honours. He and Luke Dee (Gisborne) on Maximus were the only two to go through to the jump-off, but Dee retired after dropping a rail at the second fence.
