Billy Apple gets to the core of Henry Moore sculpture

Fans of the Henry Moore sculpture Bronze Form should make it their business to head to its location next Saturday (28 March). The sculpture will be the subject of a temporary public artwork as part of the national, year-long One Day Sculpture series.

New Zealand artist Billy Apple, who has a keen interest in Moore’s work, will definitely say something about the sculpture through his 24-hour-long artwork Less is Moore, but what he will say and how he’s going to say it is top secret, in keeping with One Day Sculpture’s focus on experiencing the artwork on the day. The work is being commissioned by Victoria University’s Adam Art Gallery.

Tina Barton, the Project Curator and Director of the Adam Art Gallery, says “if you are interested in seeing what a contemporary artist like Billy Apple has to say about Bronze Form, I suggest you head to the Salamanca Lawn at the Botanic Garden next Saturday to take a look”.

Less is Moore will take place from midnight on Friday 27 until midnight on Saturday 28 March. The artwork will be followed by a public forum on Thursday 23 April at the Museum of Wellington. The 24-hour sculpture also coincides with the opening of Apple’s exhibition at the Adam Art Gallery, Billy Apple New York 1969-1973. The exhibition will run until mid-May.

Next week is the highlight of the One Day Sculpture series in Wellington – Less is Moore is one of two temporary artworks taking place in the city to coincide with the series’ symposium at Te Papa next weekend (26-28 March). Just as Billy Apple is taking on the establishment with his 24-hour artwork, Slovakian artist Roman Ondák – who some will remember for his queuing antics a year ago during the launch of the One Day Sculpture series – will address the Old Government Building on Lambton Quay with his subtle, thought-provoking work, Camouflaged Building, from 7am on Friday 27 March.

Jane Rendell (Director of Architectural Research at the Bartlett, University College London) will inaugurate the One Day Sculpture symposium at Te Papa at 6pm on Thursday 26 March, with her keynote lecture ‘Critical Spatial Practice’. The lecture is open for bookings – see www.onedaysculpture.org.nz

One Day Sculpture is a Massey University College of Creative Arts, School of Fine Arts, Litmus Research Initiative. It is supported by Wellington City Council’s Public Art Fund, and presented in partnership with many other art galleries and organisations throughout the country. Wellington will have one more temporary sculpture after this, in the middle of the year.
