Wimbledon Live On TVNZ

TVNZ has taken out the top award for best sport website at the 2009 Qantas Media Awards and has secured the rights to stream more top international sport on tvnz.co.nz this year.

Wimbledon 2009 will be simulcast live from London on TV ONE and stream live on www.tvnz.conz throughout June and early July.  TVNZ will also replay the games and provide a daily highlights package for Freeview Sports Extra.

The FA Cup is the next major sporting event to be simulcast on www.tvnz.co.nz and TV ONE during the night of the 30th & 31stof May. Anytime replays will be posted immediately afterwards on the site, a highlights package will screen on TV ONE and delayed coverage will be broadcast on Freeview Sports Extra.

GOOD SPORT  

The Qantas Judges voted www.tvnz.conz as “best sport website” at this year’s awards saying the site was, “by far the best designed”. 

“We were absolutely rapt to win the big one”, said TVNZ’s General Manager of Digital Media, Tom Cotter.  “We launched the site two weeks out from the Opening Ceremony of the Beijing Olympics and it performed well above expectation, it shows how far online has come in satisfying people’s appetite to engage with extended coverage digitally”.

“It was a great result from our online team, the whole site brought a new and valuable dimension to our overall coverage”, said TVNZ’s General Manager of Sport, Murray Needham.

OLYMPIC RECORDS

www.tvnz.co.nz/olympics launched on the 16th July in support of TVNZ’s role as official broadcaster, smashing www.tvnz.co.nz’s previous page impression and UB records.  Between the 1st and 24th of August 2008 there were 9.8 million page impressions from 760,000 unique browsers.

The site carried four live streaming channels giving the user the ability to be their own TV director and choose which event they wanted to watch. During the Olympics there were 420,000 unique viewers on the four online channels.

Traffic peaked during the men’s hockey and triathlon on the 19th of August at 5.2 GB/s - this is thought to make it the largest ever streamed event in NZ’s history.

The site featured news and commentary, published over 1700 articles, video highlights included 750 individual video clips, four channels of simultaneous video streaming from TV ONE, TVNZ Sport Extra and two additional channels (tvnz.co.nz three and tvnz.co.nz four) which were only available online, 4000 images, archive video of Kiwi gold medal wins, interactive map of Beijing, blogs from broadcasters and athletes, event schedules, medal results, message boards and polls.

Over the course of the Olympics www.tvnz.co.nz/olympics broadcast over 800 hours of sport watched by almost half a million (420,000) unique viewers.
