New Novel Sheds Light On Pop Culture Phenomenon

New Novel Sheds Light On Pop Culture Phenomenon

(Toronto, May 30, 2009) – Author, Aaron David Gottfried will have a book launch for his first novel, The Psychiatrist Who Cured the Scientologist at Indigo Books and Music Ltd. (Yonge and Eglinton) on June 27 at 2 p.m.

The newly released non-fiction novel, The Psychiatrist Who Cured the Scientologist, brings the controversial subject of Scientology to the forefront. Gottfried explains his tumultuous experience with the Church of Scientology from a first-person perspective.

His story begins as a forlorn teenager growing up outside of Toronto. His feelings of isolation at school and unhappiness at home cause him to become consumed by depression. Because he is unable to alleviate this threatening and dark world, his behaviour soon spirals out of control. He becomes plagued with radical mood swings, ranging from melancholy to mania.

Desperate for answers, Gottfried turns to an alternative treatment: Scientology. Described as a religious philosophy, the teachings of Scientology promise to cure him without medication.

However, Gottfried’s mental state rapidly deteriorates when he is sent to a Scientology camp for rehabilitation. Losing touch with reality, he finds himself battling wild delusions and hallucinations. Gottfried soon discovers that Scientology is not what he believed it to be.

This novel offers insight into the belief system of Scientology, as well as the potential dangers of joining the religion.

“Being in Scientology and living with a mood disorder is detrimental beyond belief,” explains Gottfried. “The treatment Scientology offers is supposed to be superior to any other; but it leaves no cure for chemical deficiencies.”
