Mozart At The Cathedral
Mozart At The Cathedral
Music lovers are in for a winter
treat with the Nelson Civic Choir, Viva Orchestra and guest
soloists performing Mozart’s Requiem tomorrow and
Saturday. (June 19 & 20)
Choir conductor Pete
Rainey says the Requiem Mass in D minor is a profound
work.
“It was Mozart's last composition and is
one of his most popular and most respected works,” he
said. “The Cathedral is a perfect setting for this mass
and we are extremely privileged and excited with the
performers we have gathered together for this
concert.”
Rainey said the Civic Choir is in good
heart and is ninety voices strong, the Viva Orchestra of 25
musicians will be boosted for this concert by players from
Wellington and Christchurch, and there is an impressive line
up of soloists with soprano Allison Cormack, alto Gillian
Kendrick, tenor Jason Balla and bass Chris
Burcin.
“Allison is a fine soprano who is
gathering an impressive track record of performance, and
I’m really thrilled to have Jason Balla joining us,” he
said. “He’s an international performer and a member of
the Lyric Opera of Chicago – it’s one of those Nelson
serendipities where someone in the choir told me he was here
on holiday and he has agreed to join us for this
concert.”
As well as the Requiem, the concert
will also include Laudate Dominum, Ave Verum and the Gloria
in C. Mozart at the Cathedral is on Friday 19 and Saturday
20 June, start time 8pm, no interval. Tickets for general
admission are $35 at
Everyman.
