Scary Phenomenon Finds Good Home All Over NZ

Scary Phenomenon Finds Good Home All Over New Zealand

Internet phenomenon Scary Washing Machine found a proud new owner last night who plans to take the famous appliance on a national tour.

Electrical retailer 100% won a Trade Me auction that saw money raised for various children’s charities through the sale of Scary and other associated items.

Cameron Smith, 100% Marketing Manager, promised to “look after this iconic kiwi appliance and hold it in trust for the people of New Zealand, and to make it accessible to all the fans it has inspired from all walks of life, all over the country.”

Scary Washing Machine, or “Scary” as it quickly became known, is a Fisher & Paykel “Gentle Annie” that had managed to scare its owner so much that he put it up for auction on Trade Me.

People reading his harrowing description of life with a washing machine that could apparently open wormholes to other dimensions and suck in other household appliances and even humans (the owner’s wife hasn’t been seen since a load went wrong), were captivated and soon the auction page had gathered over 700,000 views.

The story spread quickly through social media, with over 15,000 Facebook fans, and traditional media (Scary featured in a spot on TV’s Close Up), spawning T-shirts and charity auctions of the original drawings of the dinosaurs glimpsed through the wormhole it opened.

When 100% Merchandising Manager Bryce Purdy heard about the auction and the descriptions of the machine’s behaviour, he instigated a research mission into the machines past.

“We hope to shed some light on why it is what it is and if there are any more like it. We intend to research its family tree to see if the famous quirks are inherited. Who knows, there may be a family reunion!” says Bryce.

The more people Bryce saw becoming diehard supporters of this appliance with its incredible personality and making it the most talked about item on Trade Me, the more he realized that Scary Washing Machine had the power to make others share 100%’s passion for appliances. With this in mind he persuaded the company to put in a bid.

“Bryce basically pointed out that this machine could have relatives from the same batch of 300 pretty much anywhere across New Zealand and that 100% has the infrastructure and knowledge to look after it properly, research it and use our nationwide network of stores to find others like it, if they exist” says Smith.

What’s next for the appliance that captured the imagination of the country? A check up organised by 100%, and an exciting plan to tour the country. Scary will be turning up in 100% stores all over New Zealand and raising money for charity through a Trade Me auction for the chance to put a load of washing through it.

100% won’t comment on how Scary will get round the country but are refusing to rule out the use of wormholes and trans-dimensional travel.
