Film Title:
“Round”
Director: Kirk
Hendry
Location: NZ International Film
festival
Press release:
Could you make a film
using nothing but hand shadows with just one hand artist and
turn it into a mini-epic that would appear to have a cast of
hundreds? This was the challenge that New Zealand film
maker Kirk Hendry set himself when he undertook the film
‘Round’ that is currently playing in the New Zealand
International Film Festival’s Homegrown programme.
Made for the BBC Electric Proms in London, Hendry’s first challenge was to find someone who could not only do the animal shapes required in the film, but imbue them with character. It soon became apparent that no one in the UK was right for the job and an international search began, eventually leading to Argentina and a magician called Mago Serpico.

With Serpico in London, so began two gruelling days of shooting that turned the studio into a sauna with the one bright light on constantly for 15 hours a day that almost blinded the Argentinean.
The result is a film unlike anything you will have seen. Set in the jungle, ‘Round’ highlights Man's position as a brief chapter in the Earth's long story and reminds us that nature will always have the upper hand.
It is screening throughout July and August as the festival tours New Zealand.
