Dancestars

Nickelodeon’s official Nick Rocks! judges have listened to hours and hours of demo tracks and read almost a hundred band bio forms in the search for this year’s top three Nick Rocks! finalists. Thorrington School of Rock from Christchurch, Dancestars from Wellington and D.N.A from Auckland have made it through as the top three Kiwi kid bands this year.

2009 sees the biggest band to ever enter in the history of the Nick Rocks! competition, with Thorrington School of Rock’s 21 members. From Thorrington School in Christchurch the band describes their music as ‘alternative rock’ and has performed at numerous events including their school’s 50th jubilee. All girl pop band Dancestars hail from Wellington and get together to practice vigilantly twice a week along with dance classes. Meanwhile Auckland finalists D.N.A. who formed at Mt Albert’s Gladstone Primary in 2005 say they draw their inspiration from the likes of Midnight Youth, Coldplay and Green Day.

All three kid bands have had visits from the Nick crew in the past week, with mini music videos going to air on Nickelodeon from August 24 until September 6 to help Nickheads nationwide decide the final Nick Rocks! winner. Viewers can even watch the videos online at http://nicknz.co.nz to make up their minds before they submit their online and SMS votes to pick their favorite finalist. Everyone who votes goes into the draw to win a Guitar Hero Super prize pack (worth $600) or one of 50 Hasbro runner up prizes. So why wouldn’t you?!

Kid bands with members aged between 5 and 15 years are encouraged to enter Nick Rocks! every year by submitting a demo track and a band bio form. This year’s winning Nick Rocks! band will get the real rockstar experience in a professional studio as they record their best single. Add to that an interview in Upstart Magazine and radio play on Classic Hits. Their professionally produced full length music video will air on Nickelodeon (SKY Channel 041) for all Nickheads to see nationwide throughout 2009 and 2010.

Nickelodeon’s 2009 competition has the support of a host of successful Kiwi bands and musos. From Nesian Mystik to Annabelle Fay to Midnight Youth to J Williams to Clap Clap Riot – Nick Rocks! is regarded by all as a great starting point for aspiring Kiwi musos to join in the success of the New Zealand music industry.

So tune into Nickelodeon or visit http://nicknz.co.nz from August 24 until September 6 to see this year’s three finalists rock their hearts out and vote for the band that you think most deserves the Nick Rocks! title for 2009.
