Regional Finalists Named in Best Chip Shop Contest

MEDIA RELEASE

28 October 2009

Eighty chip shops from around the country have been named finalists in the That’s Life! Best Chip Shop Competition 2009.

The Chip Group Chairperson, Glenda Gourley, said Competition organisers have wrapped up the mystery judging process and have drawn up a list of top shops for each region.

“The regional finalists are now in the running to take out the top spot in the national Competition.

“As in previous years, a combination of public text voting, mystery judging and chip fat analysis determined the regional finalists from each of the six regions across New Zealand.

“A chip sample from each shop was sent away for fat analysis, and only those containing a fat level of less than 11 percent made the grade,” Glenda said.

Mystery judges also looked at a range of other criteria including chip freshness and colour, shop cleanliness and customer service.

Heart Foundation nutritionist, Judith Morley-John, said more shops are now offering salt sachets to customers instead of automatically salting them.

“Also, certificates gained through completing the Chip Online Training modules which teach owners and their staff about the industry standards, are increasingly on display in stores,” Judith said.

With the Competition almost complete, judges are now deliberating on who the six regional winners and overall Grand National winner will be. Details are will be announced on 30 October.

The ‘That’s Life! Best Chip Shop Competition 2009’ is the country’s only national chip shop competition and this year is supported by: That’s Life! magazine, ‘Goodman Fielder’, ‘Bakels’, Food2Go Magazine, McCain Foods (NZ) Ltd, ‘Mr Chips’, ‘Potatoes New Zealand’, ‘Alfa One’, ‘Eurotec’ and the ‘Heart Foundation’.
