Armistice Day 91st Anniversary Service

New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) personnel will join their Excellencies the Governor General of New Zealand, the Honorable Sir Anand Satyanand, and Lady Susan Satyanand at a commemorative service at the National War Memorial in Buckle Street, Wellington at 11.00am on Wednesday 11 November.

As part of the service a dawn to dusk Vigil will be placed over the Tomb of the Unknown Warrior.

Armistice Day is the anniversary of the official end of World War I, November 11, 1918. It commemorates the armistice signed between the Allies and Germany, for the cessation of hostilities on the Western Front, which took effect at the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month.

While the signing of the Armistice marked the official end of the war, the majority of the Expeditionary Force did not return home until 1919.

Armistice Day services will be held around the country to commemorate the sacrifice of those who died serving New Zealand in the First World War and all subsequent wars.
