SOUNZ Community Commission 2010

SOUNZ Community Commission 2010

Involved with a community group and looking for a way to engage, enthuse and motivate your members?

The SOUNZ Community Commission is a project which supports a collaboration between a community group and a professional NZ composer with the aim of creating and performing a new musical work. SOUNZ, the Centre for New Zealand Music, administers the Commission on behalf of a generous overseas donor who prefers to remain anonymous.

Previous Commissions have included:

• music for a Millennium Parade in Gisborne,

• an anthem for the Festival of Colour in Wanaka,

• incidental music for a play for school children at Capital E in Wellington,

a choir work in Braille for the Homai Campus Music course in Auckland,

• music for recorder ensemble and gamelan to play together,

music for a 'divided' community orchestra and two conductors celebrating a 50th anniversary

The Commission makes available $1500 for a professional composer to work with a community group in the preparation and performance of a new work. Information and submission forms are downloadable from the opportunity listing on our website. All the details, links and information you need can be found here Read More ->>

The possibilities are myriad - the rewards are great!

"The wonderful thing about this commission," says Julie Sperring, Executive Director of SOUNZ, "is the way in which so many people, many of them amateur musicians, can become engaged in the process of creating and presenting new music. For many, it is a first experience of composition as a dynamic, responsive, collaborative process. It is wonderful to see and hear their enthusiasm and there are just so many benefits for composers, organisers and performers."

Submissions are due by the end of this month, but talk to us if you have a great idea and need advice or time. Submissions can be from a community group, a composer but preferably from both - but, again, talk to us at SOUNZ if you would like some contact information for a composer who might be interested.
